| The Zoology Department established in the year 1946 is one of the biggest and oldest Departments in the college of Science and Technology. It is offering 2 PG courses, M.Sc Zoology and M.Sc. Fishery Science as well as M.Phil and Ph.D programmes. The student strength is approximately 150. There are 14 faculty members and about 60 research scholars. Its achievements over the years with regard to Research and training activities are quite substantial. During the last 2 decades, especially owing to the generous funding made available by UGC under SAP and COSIST programmes,the department has shown remarkable progress in infrastructural facilities. The research activities are diverse in nature and have been organized into 3 major thrust areas namely Marine Biology, Parasitology and Environmental physiology. Over the years many significant contributions have been made by specialists from these divisions. |

The division of Parasitology has carried out pioneering investigations on taxonomy, life cycles, ecology, histopathology of diverse groups of protozoan, helminth and crustacean parasites. One of the significant contributions from this group relate to the faunistic surveys on the parasites of marine fishes. The division is also actively involved in investigations on diseases of shrimps and fish from culture ponds. |

Many of the faculty members have received substantial grants from funding agencies like UGC, CSIR, DBT, MOEF, ICAR etc which enabled them to intensify and diversify the research activites and establish well equipped self sufficient personal laboratories. The Department has several collaborative research projects with national and International institutions. |

Endowed with a strong group of faculty members as well as a dynamic group of research scholars and students, the Department is well poised to organize the 19th national congress of Parasitology and Internatinal Symposium on Parasitic diseases of Animals and Man. |
